About
Crystal Stauffer
Hi, I’m Crystal Stauffer. I am a first-time mom as of November 2020. I’ve been playing sports since I was 9yrs old, was a triathlete throughout high school (volleyball, basketball, softball), and have continued (intermittent) rec league softball and beach volleyball since graduating high school (2002). I have been weightlifting and participating in group exercise for personal fitness (bootcamps, HIIT, cycling, etc.) since 2004. I am a licensed Zumba Instructor, actively teaching since 2013. A year before I became pregnant, I found a community of like-minded fitness junkies that inspired me to achieve the best physical condition of my life. I’d been on the ups and downs of the fitness and nutrition rollercoaster many times before, but this time I finally decided to take it a step further and pursue coaching. I started coaching cycling and the occasional bootcamp class - and continued well into pregnancy. While pregnant I obtained my ACE Personal Trainer and TRX Coaching Certifications.
Outside of my athletic identity, I am a Registered Nurse. I have worked at Harborview Medical Center since 2011; in the planned surgery unit x2 years, and in the Trauma Surgical ICU from 2013-current. I am BLS and ACLS certified. The education I have received pertaining to, and experience working with humans going through a wide variety of physiological, mental, and emotional periods in their lives – is transferrable to coaching. I have experience working closely with surgeons (with a large portion of our population dealing with orthopedic and abdominal injuries, frequently requiring surgery), Physical Therapists (PT), Occupational Therapists (OT), Rehab and Mental Health Professionals.
From my medical backround, personal athletic experience, and certifications going into and obtained during pregnancy, I thought I had it all figured out. I have had a profound personal journey consisting of a lifetime of getting in and out of shape, becoming pregnant during a life period when I was super fit and obsessed with exercising, intensely exercising during pregnancy (and later learning some of my struggles were potentially related to this), experiencing 3rd trimester complications and birth trauma, postpartum anxiety and depression (utilizing mental health therapy and medication), a challenging return to fitness postpartum due to pelvic organ prolapse symptoms, neck, back, and joint pain- and difficulty adjusting my expectations of myself/finding a healthy, realistic, and sustainable life balance.
My postpartum experience lead me to become a certified Postnatal Fitness Specialist (PFSA) and a Certified Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism (P&PA) Coach. I have also realized how much I enjoy the aspects of early childhood education and enriching the lives of the future of our world – so I got certified in Zumbini and Zumba Kids/Jr.! At 2.5 years postpartum, I am still trying to get back into any sort of regular exercise routine and am in my least favorite version of my body. However, I have learned so much through this journey (including the fact that my value is not determined by my appearance), that I am compelled to share it! I am giving myself permission to be human for the first time in my life, and instead of trying to wait till I have something perfect to offer, I am just putting myself out there.
I will always be a nurse, but I feel called to further pursue my fitness career. I don’t know what it looks like yet, but I believe there is some way in which I can utilize both professions to better serve the Whole Mom. Every person moves, thinks, and feels. From everyday life to high levels of athleticism, to considering the nervous system and how it shapes our thoughts and actions, to acknowledging the very real impact emotions have on every aspect of our lives – there is a significant opportunity for our society to improve the delivery of care for, and access to education about, our bodies.
As life allows, I plan to gradually start offering coaching services again. Along the way, I am on a mission to learn what would best serve my community. So, consider this an open invitation to drop me a line, about anything really. Parenthood struggles, successes, services you wish you knew about before or are currently still in search of, any ideas you might have. I look forward to hearing from you!
